Those of us engaged in mission in our communities and circles of influence inevitably bump against “spiritual resistance”. Call it what you will. The Scriptures call it “the world, the flesh, and the devil” and Paul attests that our “is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Eph. 6:12.
So whether you are of the opinion that Paul is describing dark spiritual entities, or if you read it as ungodly and oppressive systems and structures, we would agree that we all encounter situations in our daily lives and ministry whose response requires resources beyond our natural capacities.
That’s where prayer comes in. Prayer releases the resources of heaven. It is through prayer that we see GOD SIZED things happen, rather than simply us sized things.
Jesus understood this. When faced with the overwhelming need of the multitudes, he asked the disciples to utilize their natural resources (loaves and fish), and then He lifted them to heaven and engaged God’s participation. The result? GOD SIZED.
As we look over the aching and desolate multitudes of our cities, let’s do what we can. Let’s engage in mission with passion and compassion. But also let’s lift our efforts to heaven. Then we can see God break through the spiritual resistance, undermine unrighteous societal strongholds, and do immeasurably more than we can ever ask or imagine.
